Ostomy devices

Ostomy pouching system

An ostomy pouch equipment is a sealed medical device that collects, stocks and evacuates retained stool after a a colostomy or ileostomy, and retained urine after an urostomy. The choice of the device depends on the ostomy type and location, on the lifestyle, and is finally made with the help and advice of a stoma therapy nurse.

The device is composed of a collection pouch and of a system allowing the pouch to be fixed on the abdomen, around the stoma. The pouches must be perfectly adapted to the stoma in terms of size and shape, while taking into account the morphology and the activities of each individual. Therefore it is important to perform pre-operative assessments at all possible opportunities.

There are two main types of stoma therapy appliances:

  • A system called “one-piece pouch”

  • A system called “two-piece pouch”

Accessories

The development of different accessories for digestive and urinary types of ostomy, in addition to stoma therapy devices, became possible with the help of technological progress. They improve the quality of life of ostomate individuals. There is a non-exhaustive list of stoma therapy accessories, facilitating provision of care and therapy. These accessories have been developed in order to limit leakage problems, to solve skin problems while neutralising inherent odours.
